Is Drop Shipping The Perfect Business Model for Entrepreneurs

Is dropshing business the right way?

Are you currently self-employed?  Have you been able to create a business that provides for you and your family?  If so, that’s great!  I believe that in 2016 it is more important than ever to to be in control of your financial future, and I applaud everyone who is able to make that happen.


Here’s the problem – many of us figure out to how to create profitable businesses with the goal of creating more freedom for ourselves, but we end up building jobs for ourselves.  Jobs that are likely more demanding than those of our friends and family.  Sure, as business owners we should be benefiting from higher salaries, but at what expense?  Far too often do I see small business owners that over-worked and under-satisfied.

Well, my friend Anton Kraly was actually on the path to being in this exact situation right out of college.  He was looking into offline businesses, and his goal was actually to open a network of franchises that he could build up, work 80+ hours/week at, then eventually sell… you know – so that he could retire “young” and actually start enjoying all that life has to offer.

Luckily for Anton, he was introduced to the world of eCommerce right around this time, and it literally changed the entire trajectory of his life’s plan.  After almost a decade of success within this industry, he am sharing what he has learned with you as his way of giving back, and saving other people who want to escape the rat race (like you) from the far too common life of too much work and not enough free time.

So, why eCommerce?  More specially, why drop shipping?

eCommerce is a huge industry, and it’s still growing like crazy.  In fact, it’s expected to reach over $400 billion by 2017 in the USA alone!

It’s important for me to note that when I refer to eCommerce, I am referring to selling physical products online.  When I refer to drop shipping, I am referring to selling other people’s physical products online.  I am talking about about having an online store from which your customers can buy, and then having OTHER people ship these items to your customers.  That’s the beauty of drop shipping!

The truth is, you will never know what is out there which that fits or works with your store or product until you start exposing your business to the world.

The following reason is also why you should focus on traffic as soon as your store  is up and running:

  • With traffic, you will actually get to know what product has more traction on your store

  • With traffic, you can determine what price is best served for your goods.

I remember the first time I attended one of these affiliate seminars near my city I had no idea what to expect. In the end, it was a group of professionals coming together to connect and share ideas and aspirations. As well as finding new ways to improve affiliate marketing.

Offline marketing feels exactly the same way. You never know what is out there until you start taking action in reaching out to people.

The best practice to maximize this method is to:

  • Arm yourself with your complimentary cards.
  • Make sure your card contains all your contact details as well as your online profile like your website and email.
  • Offer people a discount on your store when you interact.
  • Tell your friend and family to check it out.
  • Go to your local newspaper and place an advert (most of these are free or relatively free)

Inbound: This is like Quora with a little twist. You have to be a member as well and you will need to contribute before you can share. The great here is you can also place you store link strategically on your contributions to other people thought. Only be sure it is relevant. Not Spamming.

Reddit:  Just like Quora and Inbound, this is another powerful place to get good traction back to your store. Again you have to be a member and you will need to contribute to others comment a lot before you can summit article. The rules are very strict but when done right can be a goldmine of traffic back to your store.

Other great source of free traffic and feedback from forums are:

  • r/Entrepreneur: This can be found within Reddit groups and it is a point blank made up of online store entrepreneurs.
  • There is a Facebook Group call Grow and Sell Facebook Group and in LinkedIn, there is another group called Bright Ideas and Entrepreneurs Group
  • You can let your social medial followers on Facebook, twitter, Linkedln, Instagram, etc know about your online store.
  • You can also email close friends and relatives directly after you launch. Asking them to help you share the link to your store on their social media networks.
  • You may also want to check out which social media has the best growth potentials here. This will also give you a good idea of where the future of social media is heading towards to.

I will recommend joining groups that resonates with your niche product. Especially if it is narrowed down a bit more closer to your niche for example: If your store sells towels then i will say join a group that talks about hotels ratings and international resorts.

Shopify Forums

You can find lots of forum on eCommerce topic that are good fertile ground for organic traffic and follow their rules right. Shopify forum can easily be found on Facebook and is a great place to get connected and gain insightful ideas from big players.

A lot of questions are been asked on this forum everyday and lots of great answers are provided by experts or someone who has just gone through a similar situation like you.

My recommendation here is to get involved, be active, share and like content or post from other forum members and do contribute positively. Do not overload yourself with information. Set a plan and follow it one step at a time with a decision. And always take action towards your goal. Do not procrastinate.

Paid advertising is in fact the only quickest way to get results into your online store. This can come in form of quick traffic and possible sales, feedback and your customers reaction.

At some point, you have to spend at least a little amount on PPC. Organic traffic from search engine is the holy grail of success in online business but such traffic takes time. Therefore the only way to get action into your store is by paying for traffic on Google Ad or Bing Ad.

The good news is that some platform allow a minimum starting budget of $15 or less. It can be very expensive if you do not know how to do PPC advertising. But the main reason to jump into PPC soon as your store is ready is as follows:

  • You are in control of your traffic because you are paying for it.
  • You can target any keyword without worrying about search engine algorithms.

I have had many vendors and product owners approach me for help to review their products or services but when I start asking complex questions regarding their customer services/support, some of them tend to shy away.

Now that said, let us take a look at Shopify customer service and see how you can get help and support to getting started:

The second way to get help is by email. I would suggest using this as a second alternative or if you are having difficulties that will need more detailed information in order for them to ascertain how they can help you better.

  • They offer eCommerce detailed reports in Advanced and Shopify Plus plans which enable you to see monthly performances and raw data to help you scale up your success. This can do wonders for your business if you happen to add Google Analytic to your marketing toolkit.

Cons:

  • The cheapest plan is the ‘Shopify Lite’ for $9 but this cannot let you build a fully functional online shop with all the features you need. Unless you go for the Basic Shopify and upwards.
  • You cannot avoid transaction fees if you use a third-party gateway payment processor. But then what eCommerce business doesn’t attract transaction fees these days even if its outside of Shopify?
  • With the Shopify Payment powered by Stripe, this means you can sell from certain countries like the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia. Selling from other countries outside these means you will need a third-party payment gateway. The good news is that Shopify is properly integrated with a great number of other gateway payments outside the aforementioned countries.
  • Starting with a small online store will seem more expensive with Shopify to start with, but will become more affordable as you start to see more sells over time. BigCommerce may sound like a good idea in terms of starting cost but lacks the many features found in Shopify which may limit your result.
  • Shopify is not a get rich quick scheme meaning if you expect to become successful in your online store in 20 minutes then be ready to be disappointed.  You have to put in the time and effort because they do it right and they do not cut corners as you will surely see good results.

The major differences between Shopify and other e-commerce platforms out there are as follows. (Please note that the list below is not all there is as I am working on a more detailed comparison article which is coming  soon.)

  • First, you don’t only pay for the plans on monthly basis. They also allow you to pay on an annual or biennial basis.
  • Shopify does offer a 10% discount on an annual and a 20% discount on a biennial plan when you pay at once or up front.
  • With the volume of uncertainties associated with many businesses today, most folks with a low budget do choose the monthly basis until they are certain that their business will survive long term. Shopify makes things easy for folk starting out fresh.
  • Another big difference between Shopify and other competitors out there can be found within the Shopify Lite Plan which whilst you are not getting the full hosted online store, it still does allow you to make use of a handful of vital Shopify tools for an unbelievable low monthly payment. Other competitors don’t offer this.

From my researches and what i have noticed on this topic, a lot of folks tend to skip through this issue so quickly because they want to sell you one shiny object or another that promises to show you the holy grail of how to make tons of money selling with fulfillment by Amazon.

I am not going to do any comparison between eBay and Amazon for the sole reason that it is not the purpose of this report in any way.

So if you are in a hurry to find that holy grail and jump right in with your credit cards to buy every shine object thrown at you then good luck. But if you are ready to really understand what you need and how to get started smartly in selling with Amazon FBA, then continue reading and you will thank me later.

 

Overview Of How To Start With Amazon FBA


If you are planning to sell online, it will be more advantageous to consider Amazon’s fulfillment program known as FBA which stands for “Fulfillment By Amazon”. Also known as Fulfillment company that provides storage and shipping services to their client’s products. The client here is you the seller, and your buyers already exist in the Amazon market place which makes them your buyers and your ready made market.

Once you have an Amazon selling account, you can contact the Amazon customer service department to help you set up your FBA account which also gives you an actual FBA representative who will also be helping you with any issues in the future and will actually work you through your first shipment.

But before you jump right in, there are things you the seller and as a business person should know in advance because these are things no one will easily tell you about getting started except may be you did your thorough research just like you are doing right now on my site today.

I will discourse these step in the next paragraph below.

 

Items You Will Need Very Handy Before Setting Up Your Amazon FBA Account


The list below consist of item you need to consider having very handy before starting the process of creating your Amazon FBA account. Some are a must have while others are up to you and depends on your account type:-

  1. Are you choosing the Professional account? It is $0.00 first month free. Then after a month it is $39.99 per months but you can always switch to individual account if you choose to.
  2. If you are choosing the Professional account, then what is your base line or break even point? Again this boils down to how much you want to start with. (Your Initial capital).
  3. You may not need your bank details handy right away but on your seller account, it will be needed to send your payment so you might just as well do it at once right from the beginning.
  4. Are you considering the individual account? Which by the way is $0.99 cent per unit of every item sold and preferably best choice for  beginners.
  5. Have you decided on your seller name yet? Because believe it or not someone else probably has the same name as yours. You can use your own name but lots of folks out there use alias or even better still, use their company name. The point here is to be different and unique and if you are brand oriented with your private label for example then use it.
  6. You will need to have your W-9 Form handy with your social security number as Amazon is required to report payment with the IRS.
  7. You need to ask yourself which sub-niche you want to go into. Is it Private labeling? Or Retail Arbitraging? How about Wholesale and Treasure Hunting with your FBA program? Again these are optional as it is not a requisite but very vital decision you should make on your own.
  8. You will need a lively credit card very handy.

 

Things To Watch Out For and Be Careful With When Signing Your Agreement With Your Amazon FBA Account Set Up


  1. Read the agreement thoroughly before accepting
  2. Amazon has the right to deduct from your account if it goes negative as a result of warehousing and or shipping cost not paid as suppose. That is if you have insufficient fund in your account balance.
  3. Be very clear of which type of account you want. Either professional or individual account and make sure you understand your responsibilities to maintain it.
  4. The power to deduct from your account is clearly stated on the second part of your agreement should you say you weren’t aware if such event occurs. Usually this will not be an issue as you will be busy making more money from your items which will in turn take care of your fees.
  5. Therefore peal your eyes on your account to make sure it stays out of negative.
  6. How do you choose to send your inventory? Are you mix-mingling them? (commingling) Or labeled? I would prefer labeled as this will ensure your items doesn’t get mixed or sent wrongly to buyers which will make angry buyers and first impression go wrong. You don’t want to start off with very bad rating are you?
  7. Always have it at the back of your mind to carefully select your products.
  8. Avoid selling items that are prone to counterfeiters because you could be seen as selling fakes and run the risk of getting your account closed not to mention bad rating and high customer returns.
  9. Make you understand that you are responsible for paying your sales tax. This is very important. In fact it is the most important and it is stated very clear in their agreement F-14 Tax Matters. Although they offer sellers tax collection services for a fee, it is up to you and you will need a State Registration Number depending on your location from and  where you want Amazon to do the services for you.
  10. You can choose to take things slowly or step by step and see how your business pans out before worrying yourself with all the paper work involved with registrations.
